Vodka was a New York City quartet in the early 90s that were deeply loved by their devoted fans. Most people found it hard to make heads or tails of them but they were hypnotic and enchanting, and it was a great pity when they dissolved.

Bass player Jenny Wade dominated their sound with her percussive, oceanic style--the center of gravity that the other instruments braided around. They were at first a trio, but managed to persuade local guitar legend Bob Bannister to join them, at first because their drummer fancied him. After their first gig they refused to let him go, and his lede guitar came to also mark their sound. (This subplot also resulted in a child, Jeremy, now 21.)

The members of Vodka were: Greg Talenfeld, the brilliant songwriter and arranger, whose many bands included Cottonhead, Pebbles and The Beach, and The Indigos, Jenny Wade, formerly of Rude Buddha, Timber, and others. Celia Farber was the drummer--also in The Indigos, as well as The Tryfles, and The Headless Horsemen. And Bob Bannister was in too many bands to list, but most famously, Fire In The Kitchen--who shared a bill with Vodka in the very beginning.

Jenny did most of the singing, and most of the lyric writing--sometimes translating Russian poems from the Acmeist era, like the mournful "Green Transparent Star" which grew out of a Mandelstam poem.

Some of their songs are in non 4, non 3, time signatures, which gave them an ever so slight art-rock reputation, and forced their drummer to outgrow her garage rock origins.

Their instrumental masterpiece "Diamonds" began with an erotic dream, spontaneously narrated from the stage by the ever hilarious Ms. Wade.
